HOW TO DO EMBROIDERY WHEN YOU’RE A MINIMALIST

Hey guys! Today’s bit is about three things. First, my take on the embroidery trend which, for the most part, I find way too girly and colourful. Second, military as a key part of my maxi-minimalist style – I can’t get enough of it! Third, this is my first time playing with my Olympus Pen, which is reason enough to celebrate.

How a minimalist does embroidery

Why, with one epic piece and an otherwise minimal outfit. I chose a lightly distressed grey-black pair of jeans with a cut that’s a cross between the skinny and the boyfriend. Take your time to find the right colour and style. Going all out with rips, embroidery or boyish bagginess would make the look too busy, while wearing pristine black will make it overly dressy. With this type of jacket, the ideal top is plain black and shows some skin. I’m kind of tempted to wear something high-necked (think costumes in a period movie) but covering up under this embellished  standing collar would feel bulky and awkward. Finally, to complete the look, pop some snug black ankle boots on and grab your fave black bag. Wearing a red bag is another temptation the minimalist must resist, at least when wearing this jacket – just too matchy, the wrong way.

The why: enter the military vibe

So, why would a minimalist in her right mind do embroidery? Well, blame it on the military vibe. The ‘maxi’ part of maxi-minimalism I identify with has a lot to do with dressy military. It’s actually quite minimal, just with a dash of baroque opulence. I’ve always been nuts for military cuts and details. If I could, I would buy every single military jacket in my size. And if I did, I would break the bank, just with the huuuge choice in stores lately, not to mention vintage. Anyway, I got this piece and I’m happy I did. I wanted a cool alternative to the embroidered bomber trend I find I’m skipping altogether.

The Olympus Pen, my latest epic toy

In the past few years I’ve been craving to up the photography game. Still, I wasn’t ready for DSLR, for a number of reasons: big, heavy, pricey, and hey, I’m no pro, so there was no justifying the splurge. But since the Pen generation has been around, the picture changed. Suddenly I knew what to get if I wanted great photos, a size that fits in my bag, a weight I can actually lift, and a price that’s accessible if I really mean it. Plus, there’s a lot of help out there for people like me, from people like me. I think this was what decided it for me. I heard about the Pen from bloggers, I got no-nonsense reviews and answers to tons of questions, enough to make an informed decision and start out on the journey.

So, these are just the first outfit snaps but this time I have a feeling I’m actually going to learn photography, something I’ve always wanted. Thanks Olympus, bloody clever of you 🙂

Till next time – as a bonus, I added some of my very first snaps with the camera below, zero make-up and all 😀
