GRUNGE PERFECTION: SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

Oh, the Nineties. Having done a grunge post just about makes my month but that very fact is weird. In the Nineties, you wore the oversized motif, logo or slogan tees, the check shirts, the leggings, the ankle booties, the round sunnies and the beanies but didn’t think anything of it. All thrown together it looked the way it looked, like the crazy-dirty-looking-mashed-up-uncool thing it was. Essentially, you woke up like this. You went to school, hung out with friends, made music and partied like this.

How to do Nineties grunge

First of all, the most important of the Nineties grunge essentials is the approach, the seemingly careless layering. Next, it’s a combination of key pieces: a rock-style tee, a check shirt, a soft beanie and the round sunnies. Finally, for a total look, you only need to add Converse All Stars or Docs – your choice 🙂

When did messy old Nineties grunge got done up almost to the point of glam? Is it a making of the old style icons or the new? Is it our nostalgia combined with a whole new world of choice or our new-found savviness itching to go back and perfect what can – or can’t – be perfected? This line of thought is bound to take me farther than I want to go, and I guess it gets to me a bit because this is in my DNA. I mostly avoid flirty-feminine things like the plague, I love minimal chic and the Sixties but I will likely be something of a tomboy and a grunge-and-rock mock biker chick forever. How do you stand with this type of look?
