PHOTO DIARY: BATH

Bath, UK, Royal Victoria Park entrance

We visited the charming city of Bath in Somerset, England when we set out on the Bath-Bristol-Cardiff route from Oxford over a couple of days.

Since it was a round trip, I didn’t feel I could spend time waiting for people to get out of the shots at my leisure. I sort of regret that. But an eerie little place like this, with its muted majesty, would have looked even more unreal without the crowds. Anyway, I managed a few nice and moody shots using the film camera.

Bath is a loveable and compact place with a distinct atmosphere. It owes its style to two things, basically: its ancient Roman predecessor called Aquae Sulis, and the Edwardian architecture that dominates everywhere.

Now, when in Britain… somehow it goes against the grain to notice, much less shoot, plants on film. After all, what’s there to see besides manicured green lawns? I’m all for architecture, light, space and the general mood of a place as defined by those. Still, the flora exuded a magic I couldn’t help but fall for – see the red tree in the last pic to see what I mean. Later on, I got into taking more photos of trees and flowers and it looks like it all started here…

Top sights not to be missed in Bath

  • Roman Baths
  • Pulteney Bridge on the River Avon
  • Bath Abbey
  • The Circus (with the curved town houses, each a quarter of a full circle)
  • Royal Victoria Park
  • Royal Crescent (the huge, curved single-building street that looks on green open space)
  • Georgian streets, the backdrop to two of Jane Austen’s novels
  • For the record, Bath has a Fashion Museum you can visit if you have a bit of time.
